Vast utopian society?

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Until the last paragraph of Caitlin Flanagan and Benjamin Schwarz’s NYT piece about what they think might be an upcoming culture war among liberals over Prop 8, it was just one of those confiding, just-us-liberals-talking-here columns that the NYT specializes in.

But it ends with this: “As anyone who ever had to sit through a lecture on ‘the paradox of tolerance’ can tell you, it’s possible to create a vast utopian society forged of many previously disenfranchised groups — but you don’t want to ask too many questions.”

First, I don’t know what that means.

But–what utopian society are they talking about? Stalin’s Russia? What “vast utopian society” has ever existed?
