6,000 Iraqi vet suicides

I attended a fascinating lecture by Lucinda Franks, during which she said there have been 6,000 suicides of Iraqi veterans - that’s 2,000 more than all the battle-related deaths. She says the Feds don’t keep those figures, and you have to build it from the statistics the states keep.  If it’s true, this is a staggering number.

Philosophy majors on rise?

I’m usually skeptical of higher-ed trend stories like this one. But this point was made several times:

“…in an era in which people change careers frequently, philosophy makes sense.”

You could say that about all of the humanities. But you don’t often hear it.
